Railway Dock - Late Afternoon 60s/70s

Medium: OIls on Canvas

Original Size: 75 cm x 60 cm

As a child I found the Railway Dock haunting with its defunct looking crane and the overhanging warehouses that stretched like a huge wall blocking out the sun.Ghostly reminders of its busy past.

The distant boats are ready to be scrapped and the foreground scene is of occasional trade.

For me growing up, the dock was melancholy but also beautiful with the magical coming together of brick, stone and water.

Railway sheds once stood where the hotel is today. They spewed out hard metal tracks imbedded in cobbles, lacing their way across and joining Castle Street.I often saw boys "twagging" from school, flat on their stomachs, fishing for eels.
