Whitefriargate in the Early 70s

Medium: Oils on Canvas

Original Size: 75 cm x 60 cm

Growing up in Hull meant a walk every Saturday afternoon down Whitefriargate. We would pass the smell of oil and water from Princes Dock where ships moored by Monument Bridge.

We bought fish at Monument Fisheries and then passed the teenagers crowded round the cream phone boxes.

We joined the window shoppers on the recently pedestrianised thoroughfarewhere people were getting used to 'owning' the street!

My mother would be making me drag along an early shabby shopping trolley.I would be acutely aware of how 'uncool' I looked. My Mum and Gran [who we called Lal] would be nattering and I would be lugging their shopping behind them.
