The Barge “Phyllis” at Barton on Humber

Medium: Oils on canvas

Original size: 45 x 61

I saw the barge, “Phyllis”, one early Spring morning.
I crossed the Humber to Barton and drove into low lying cloud.
Visibilty was poor but as the haze diminished I could make out the structure of a wooden boat with lots of character on a mud bank.
I jumped over the railings with my easel, canvas and paints and landed in mud!
I began by using blue paint to sketch out the proportions of the boat and jotting down necessary colour combinations.
The cloud moved back in and the boat became a blur again and I finished the picture in my studio!
